    Mayor’s Day of Concern for the Hungry Saturday, September 19, 2015 10:00am – 2:00pm at local grocery stores Donations benefit the Federal Way Multi Service Center Food Bank The Facts: • 1 in 5 households in WA State don’t have enough money to properly feed their families • 58.8% of Federal Way students, in 2014, were eligible for free or reduced price meals • 1 in 6 people rely on SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) • Since 2008, there has been a 52% increase in need for food bank use • 1/2 of all people on SNAP are school age children Hunger’s Impact on Kids • Development: Food-insecure children are 90% more likely to have health problems, like colds, headaches, stomachaches & hospitalizations. • Education: Hungry kids have a harder time concentrating & have more behavior issues at school. • Health: Childhood hunger is linked to significant health problems developing in adulthood. • Economic Impact: Public education costs for failing kid

    Come learn about water conservation, how to prevent polluted runoff, and the benefits of rain barrels. Water stored in your rain barrel can be used around the home and garden, it will absorb slowly into the ground replenishing groundwater supplies. A limited number of rain barrels will be available for purchase for $25 (cash only).

By dropping off your medications at this event, you can help reduce potential drug abuse, accidental poisonings and discharge of chemicals to the environment. All pharmaceutical products will be accepted. Please note that Intra-venous solutions, syringes, medical waste, marijuana, methamphetamine or other illicit controlled substances will not be accepted at this event.
