Special Recycling Event

The City of Federal Way sponsors a recycling event each spring and fall for residents to drop off a wide range of materials not typically collected at the curb and/or banned from disposal such as appliances, petroleum products, wood, mattresses, batteries, tires, electronics and fluorescent tubes.

Recycling Event Schedule

Events are typically held two Saturdays a year, in the spring and fall, from 9am-3pm at the Twin Lakes Park & Ride (21st Ave SW & SW 344th).
The next event will be held Saturday, September 18.

King County holds similar events in other areas of the county during the spring, summer and fall. The events serve residents throughout King County, outside the City of Seattle. Check King County's Recycling Collection Events Schedule for other dates and locations.

Recycling Event Items Accepted

The recycling event accepts a variety of materials for recycling or reuse:

  • Scrap metal & appliances
  • Clean wood
  • Stumps & logs
  • Refrigerators & freezers ($10 cash fee)
  • Electronics (other than TVs, computers and monitors)
  • Fluorescent bulbs & tubes
  • Mattresses
  • Reusable items for Goodwill
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Petroleum products
  • Rigid plastic
  • Styrofoam blocks
  • Packing peanuts
  • Holiday light strands

NO TVs or Computers: Washington State law provides free and convenient electronics recycling to residents. For more details, visit ecyclewashington.org. Televisions, computers and monitors will no longer be collected at Federal Way recycling events. However, other electronics (printers, CD/DVD players, cell phones) will still be accepted at the recycling events free of charge.

All items will be recycled except the household goods and packing peanuts which will be reused. If you have an item that is still in good, working condition, please consider giving it away or donating it. See the reusing and recycling special materials webpage for more information and options.

New items are being considered each year. If you have a suggestion for an item that is difficult to recycle, please contact Jeanette Brizendine, Recycling Project Manager, at (253) 835-2771 or Jeanette.Brizendine@cityoffederalway.com.

Recycling Event Fees

Most items at the recycling event are accepted free of charge to residents. There is a $10 cash fee for recycling refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.

The event is sponsored by the City of Federal Way using grants from the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County.
