City Departments
City Manager's Office This department provides direction and coordination of all City departments and activities, in accordance with policies set by the City Council. The Manager's Office provides the Council and staff with a complete financial plan through preparations and administration of the City's budget and ten year City Improvement Plan (253) 835-2401. The City's Municipal Court is included in this department.
The Municipal Court is the city's judicial branch. It hears misdemeanors, civil infractions, and traffic infractions (253) 835-3000. Police Department Between 1990 and 1996, the City contracted with King County Police to provide public safety services. In October 1996, the City fielded its own police personnel in a department founded on the values of reliability, responsiveness, firmness, consideration, integration, and innovation. Department operations are based on the community policing model, increasing police-citizen interactions, and community problem-solving. (253) 835-6700. Public Works Department This department is responsible for providing or contracting for municipal services, including engineering, traffic flow, street systems, surface water management, solid waste and recycling, and transportation planning (253) 835-2700. Community Development Services This department is responsible for development review, land use planning, code compliance, long range planning, human services, and community involvement. Building, electrical, and development permits may be obtained on the second floor of City Hall (253) 835-2607. City Attorney This department is responsible for drafting and developing City laws and legal positions, providing legal advice to City Council and staff, and representing the City, its officers and employees in any dispute, including civil and criminal cases. The Law Department has a Civil Division and a Prosecution (Criminal) Division (253) 835-2560. Finance Department The Finance Department provides accurate financial information from which educated judgements and decisions can be made by management regarding the financial health and operations of the City. Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services This department is responsible for acquiring, developing and maintaining community parks, offering a variety of recreational programs and special events, and fostering the arts (253) 835-6901. Human Resources Department Human Resources Department provide management, administration, and coordination of the City's human resources functions and support of organizational development. The Division provides City departments with timely and professional assistance and guidance to best manage their employees and to accomplish their goals and service delivery responsibilities. The purpose of the program is to maintain a fair and equitable human resource management system by balancing the needs of employees and the City, and to assure compliance with applicable rules and regulations. Information Technology Department The Information Technology department receives its operating funds from the Internal Services Fund. The fund also accumulates money to replace capital equipment and software as needed. Program costs are recovered via interfund charges. The fund is designed to account for all costs associated with city information technology needs and services. This includes Researching, designing, purchasing, configuring, maintaining, supporting and upgrading all data, voice, and video systems; staff training; Geographical Information systems (GIS); Government Access Channel (GAC) broadcasting; Internet, Intranet;(WWW) services; and mail and duplication services.
