Building Permits

Construction permit applications are accepted and permits are issued between the hours of 8am to 4:45pm, Monday through Friday (no appointment required). Some applications may be faxed (253-835-2609), please call a Development Specialist, (253) 835-2607, for more specifc information. In addition, certain simple projects may be handled over the counter (OTC), by appointment only. Please review the OTC handouts and then call a Development Specialist to find out if your project meets OTC application requirements and to request an appointment.

Virtually every improvement on a residential or commercial lot requires a permit (exempt items). Because the permit process is a dynamic process involving staff and an applicant, several factors can affect process time lines. The main influences are:

  • Completeness and clarity of plans.
  • Submittal of all requested information.
  • Availability of key people (owner, architect, engineer etc.).
  • Application volumes at time of submittal.
  • Type of permit.

The division has a number of handouts that summarize code requirements. Please note that the handouts are not intended to replace or subsitute for codes. For additional information, please call a Development Specialist at (253) 835-2607.

Parcel Numbers
Property parcel numbers can be found by using the City's Maps, or asking a Development Specialist at (253) 835-2607.

Records Request
If you would like information on a past or current project, you may fill out a Icon Public Record Request and send it to the City Clerk's Office, (253) 835-2540.
