Green Living Workshops
The City of Federal Way is excited to offer free monthly workshops on green living. Topics will range from backyard chickens, gardening, worm bin composting, rain barrels, green holidays and more. We hope you will join us for these free, fun and informative workshops.

All workshops will be held from 6pm to 8pm on the second Wednesday of each month (except November which is delayed one day due to the holiday) in City Hall Council Chambers at 33325 8th Ave S, Federal Way, WA 98003.

Clutter Clearing & Disposal Options

Simplify your life. Improve your health and energy by cleaning out your clutter. Give yourself a powerful start to 2015 by cleaning out your overfull spaces, the things with no home, your excess "baggage" and the stuff you hold onto but don't really like or use. Good Vibrations will teach techniques to lighten the emotional connections we have stuff, tips for effective clutter clearing, and resources of what to do with your clutter once cleared.

Green Cleaning: Save Money & Improve Your Health

Green cleaning is more than just baking soda and vinegar. Improve your health and energy by creating a sparkly clean and vibrant home - the residue - free way. Blue Sky Services share tips and her favorite recipes. King County Local Hazardous Waste Management Program will provide a presentation to raise awareness on how to reduce exposure to and reduce the use of harsh cleaning chemicals and share information household hazardous waste disposal sites.

Backyard Chickens

Seattle Tilth will share tips and techniques on how to raise backyard chickens, including important considerations in caring for a small flock of hens in limited space including chicken physiology, behavior, health, nutrition and housing. City of Federal Way Community & Economic Development will explain code and restrictions for urban livestock such as chickens, ducks, rabbits, bees and goats.

Organic Veggie Gardening & Raised Beds

For the experienced gardener or a first-timer, raised garden beds are an easy-to-manage and productive way of gardening. This workshop will give you tips on planning, building, protecting and irrigating raised bed gardens to grow organic, tasty vegetables for your family. We will walk you through the process of choosing the best location for your garden, constructing the beds, building a fence and planting. We will show you that that being a producer of food is simple, fun, and rewarding.

Attracting Birds, Bees, Butterflies & Bats

Birds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are in significant decline across the country and around the world. At this workshop learn about native plants you can plant to attract more birds, bees, butterflies, and even bats to your yard! Native shrubs and flowering plants use less water than non-natives, are low maintenance, and provide great food and habitat for pollinators.

Worm Bins & Backyard Composting

The Garden Hotline will show attendees how to set up and maintain a worm composting bin. Great for people without yard waste service who no longer want to send food to the landfill.
Discover easy ways to turn your lawn clippings, fall leaves and plant trimmings into nutrient-rich compost using a backyard compost bin.

Rain Barrels & Water Conservation

Come learn about water conservation, how to prevent polluted runoff, and the benefits of rain barrels. Water stored in your rain barrel can be used around the home and garden, it will absorb slowly into the ground replenishing groundwater supplies. A limited number of rain barrels will be available for purchase for $25 (cash only).

Puget Sound Energy will share easy no-cost and low-cost ways to conserve energy. Learn about the current residential energy rebates available. Steeply discounted LED bulbs will be available for purchase.

Fruit Tree Pruning
