Green Living Workshops
The City of Federal Way is excited to offer free monthly workshops on green living. Topics will range from backyard chickens, gardening, worm bin composting, rain barrels, green holidays and more. We hope you will join us for these free, fun and informative workshops.

All workshops will be held from 6pm to 8pm on the second Wednesday of each month (except August & December) in City Hall Council Chambers at 33325 8th Ave S, Federal Way, WA 98003. Light refreshments, door prizes, free giveaways and handouts
provided.

Funny & Inspiring Environmental Movie Night
Wednesday, January 8, 2014, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

• Join us for a screening of the comedic and multiple award-winning environmental documentary, The Clean Bin Project. It is a fun and inspiring film about a couple who ask the question “What can an individual do?” According to The Squamish Chief, it is ““One of the most candid and humorous films I’ve ever seen.”

Fruit Tree Pruning & Bees

• Learn about various fruit tree pruning techniques, tools and local resources for additional information about growing and caring for fruit trees. Also, hear a presentation on the basics of bee-keeping and an overview of the city zoning regulations for bee-keeping in Federal Way. Whether you are just contemplating raising edible fruit and/or bees or are already in the game, this workshop will have something for you. 

Backyard Chickens

• Seattle Tilth will share tips and techniques on how to raise backyard chickens, including important considerations in caring for a small flock of hens in limited space including chicken physiology, behavior, health, nutrition and housing.
• City of Federal Way Community & Economic Development will explain code and restrictions for urban livestock such as chickens, ducks, rabbits, bees and goats.

Sustainable Landscaping

• In this workshop you’ll learn about controlling pests without toxic pesticides or herbicides, building healthy soil, practicing smart watering and natural lawn care, and designing with plants. We’ll answer your tough questions and offer advice from one of the Puget Sound’s most notable experts, Emily Bishton of Green Light Gardening.

Wildlife-Friendly Gardening

• Walking and biking are good for our health, good for the environment and good for our wallets. However, finding safe places to walk and bike in and around Federal Way can be a challenge. At this workshop we will hear from folks who are working on improving Federal Way’s walkability and bikability. Participants at this workshop should come away feeling motivated to take more trips with two feet and two wheels, especially as we look forward to beautiful long summer days.


Rain Barrels & Water Conservation

• Come learn about water conservation, how to prevent polluted runoff, and the benefits of rain barrels. Water stored in your rain barrel can be used around the home and garden, it will absorb slowly into the ground replenishing groundwater supplies.

Green Holidays & Purchasing (How to Spot Deceptive Green Marketing)
