In 2011, the Community and Economic Development Department received grant funds from the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) program. The grant program, administered by Public Health – Seattle & King County, provided funding and technical assistance to local governments for policy development that afforded options for healthy and active lifestyles.
The department used a portion of the grant funding to prepare a subarea plan for the Twin Lakes Commercial District centered at the intersection of 21st Avenue SW and SW Campus Drive. With the assistance of a citizen stakeholder group, city staff prepared the plan to include neighborhood focused goals and policies related to building/site design, economic development, bicycle/pedestrian mobility, and healthy eating/food access.
The Federal Way City Council adopted the subarea plan by ordinance March 6, 2012. The subarea plan is now Chapter 12 of the city’s comprehensive plan. The subarea plan and the entire Federal Way Comprehensive Plan can be viewed here. Thank you stakeholders and workshop participants for all your input and making this process a success. Implementation of the subarea plan is currently on the Planning Commission Work Program.
