EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Temporary, Part-Time

Note:  This is a temporary, part-time position without benefits, working a maximum of 25 hours per week.



Under the direction of the Building Official, the Abatement Technician investigates graffiti and/or signage complaints, removes shopping carts from the right a way and takes the appropriate actions to ensure compliance with the City of Federal Way’s graffiti/signage/shopping cart policies. This position performs technical graffiti removal work in the field, abatement of sign violations and shopping cart removal.



  • Coordinate and perform the routine removal of graffiti from private and public property using chemicals, solvents, paint products, and/or use of pressure washers or sand-blasting.
  • Coordinate and perform enforcement of the City’s temporary and portable sign regulations within right-of-ways and on private and public properties.
  • Removal of shopping carts in the right a way.
  • Contact the business owners to schedule shopping cart pick up.
  • Provide tactful written and verbal interaction and education regarding City ordinances and policies with the public and other City divisions.
  • Process, record and complete all required paperwork.
  • Maintain inventory and control of supplies and related items.
  • Follow established safety requirements and maintain safe driving record.
  • Stay current on available graffiti removal products and related information.
  • Retrieve messages from the City’s graffiti hotline.
  • Examine and organize graffiti removal requests.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Manage date base for shopping cart fines.
  • Send out compliance letters
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.



  • Knowledge of digital camera and iPad operation including downloading/uploading photos.
  • Knowledge of proper painting techniques.
  • Ability to be trained in safety regulations and the use of MSDS information.
  • Previous experience driving a cargo-type van and/or truck with equipment trailer attached is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to safely park and maneuver a vehicle with equipment trailer attached is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with and ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.   Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.  Must be a minimum of 18 years of age at time of hire.  Previous experience with chemicals, solvents, paint products, graffiti removal, pressure washer and sandblasting use preferred.  Flagging certification preferred.
