The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded the City of Federal Way the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. Federal Way received this honor for its comprehensive financial report during the fiscal year ending December 31, 2021.

β€œWe are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and professional finance staff," Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell said. "I could not be more proud of the results they have accomplished for not just our City government but for the people of our community.”

The Certificate of Achievement is a prestigious government accounting and financial reporting award, representing the utmost recognition. It is given to those who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in government and management.

When a government earns a Certificate of Achievement, the person or department responsible for obtaining it will also receive an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement (AFRA).

"We believe that our finance to the City we serve reflects our commitment to good financial stewardship," Steve Groom, the City of Federal Way's Finance Director, said. "Our finance staff participates at the national level writing GFOA government treasury policies and conducting best practice training locally. It is essential to acknowledge the Deputy Director, Chase Donnelly, who deserves the majority of the credit for his exceptional leadership in coordinating with every department in the City."

The City of Federal Way has maintained its streak of excellence for 32 years since our first achievement in 1990.
