The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that our area will reach the red category with excessive heat from the 80s to the low-90s through Wednesday, August 16. This heat level can adversely affect individuals who do not have adequate cooling and hydration.

The Federal Way Community Center (FWCC) will serve as our cooling center during regular business hours when excessive heat warnings are in our service area.

If you're experiencing the sweltering heat this week, you and your family are welcome to seek relief at the center.

"We want to acknowledge that many people in our community don’t have air conditioning in their homes, which can put them at risk of heat-related illnesses, including death," said Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell. "Pets are also vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, and we encourage the community to find a cool place for them as they're not allowed at the FWCC. It's essential to be aware of these risks and take appropriate precautions. We’re proud to have the FWCC as a cooling space for our Federal Way community during times like this."

The FWCC operates during the following hours:

Monday to Friday from 5 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The FWCC is available to the public free of charge, but pets are not allowed. Day passes are available for purchase at the FWCC.

The FWCC is at 876 S. 333rd Street in Federal Way 98003. For additional details, you can visit itallhappenshere.org.
